Answers to the questions we hear most from building owners and facility managers across New Jersey and Eastern Pennsylvania. Don’t see yours? Ask us directly or call (908) 320-8124.
How often do fire sprinkler systems need to be inspected?
NFPA 25 sets the schedule: certain checks are monthly or quarterly (gauges, valves, alarm devices), a full system inspection is required annually, and internal piping examinations are required every five years. The exact mix depends on your system type — we build a schedule for your facility so every interval is covered.
Is fire protection inspection required by law?
Yes. New Jersey’s Uniform Fire Code and the codes adopted by Pennsylvania municipalities require water-based fire protection systems to be inspected, tested and maintained in accordance with NFPA 25. Your insurance carrier will also expect current inspection records.
What is NFPA 25?
NFPA 25 is the national standard for the inspection, testing and maintenance of water-based fire protection systems — sprinklers, standpipes, fire pumps and related equipment. It defines what must be checked, how, and how often.
What happens if an inspection finds a deficiency?
We document it clearly in your report, explain what it means, and recommend the corrective action. Catching deficiencies is the purpose of an inspection. Addressing them promptly keeps your building compliant and protected.
What is the difference between inspection, testing and maintenance?
An inspection is a visual examination to verify the system appears operational. Testing physically operates components — flowing water, tripping alarms — to prove they work. Maintenance is the corrective work that keeps everything in service. NFPA 25 requires all three on defined schedules.
Who is qualified to inspect fire protection systems?
Inspections should be performed by licensed, qualified professionals. Northwatch Fire Protection is licensed in New Jersey and NICET certified, and every report we issue is ready to hand to your fire marshal or insurance carrier.
What records do I need to keep?
The fire marshal and your insurer will expect current inspection and test reports for every system in the building. Every Northwatch inspection is documented in an itemized report delivered through our customer portal, where your full history stays organized and accessible.
