Backflow Testing FAQs

How often does my backflow preventer need to be tested?

Annually for most commercial, industrial and multifamily properties in New Jersey. Testable devices at one- and two-family homes are exempt from annual retesting under the Uniform Construction Code, but your water utility can still require testing under its cross-connection control program (NJ DCA Bulletin 99-2).

Who is allowed to do backflow testing in New Jersey?

The tester must hold a certification from an agency recognized by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection. Municipal inspectors may witness the test but are not permitted to perform it (NJ DCA Bulletin 99-2).

Do I have to submit the results?

Yes. Your plumbing inspector needs either to witness the test or to receive a test certification before issuing your Certificate of Compliance, which is valid for one year. Many towns also charge an annual fee. We submit the paperwork for you (NJ DCA Bulletin 99-2).

What types of backflow preventers do you test?

Reduced pressure zone assemblies (RPZ), double check valve assemblies (DCVA), double check detector and reduced pressure detector assemblies on fire services (DCDA / RPDA) and pressure vacuum breakers (PVB), on domestic water, irrigation, fire protection, boiler and process connections.

Can you repair a failed backflow preventer?

Yes. We repair any type of backflow assembly and retest it once the repair is complete.

Can you replace my backflow preventer?

On fire sprinkler services, yes. Every backflow preventer replacement requires a construction permit, and replacement devices on fire services must be approved for fire-protection service (NJ DCA Bulletin 99-2). Full replacement of a domestic or irrigation assembly is plumbing work that must be performed by a New Jersey licensed master plumber (N.J.S.A. 45:14C-1 et seq.).

Can you test my fire line backflow during my sprinkler inspection?

Yes. A backflow preventer on a fire sprinkler service needs the certified backflow test required by the plumbing code and the annual forward-flow test at system demand required by NFPA 25. We do both in one visit.

What if my facility has an NJDEP Physical Connection Permit?

A physical connection links a public water system to an unapproved supply, such as a private well. Permit holders must have each device tested at least every three months by a certified tester, and double check valve assemblies must also be internally inspected each year (NJDEP Physical Connection Permits). We schedule the tests and complete the NJDEP quarterly report.
